Unpaid Leave
Nenkyuu, or paid leave, is part of your contract. So long as it doesn't interfere with your contractual obligations, you may use it whenever you wish.
Unpaid leave is NOT something you are entitled to, nor is it something you should ask for. Unpaid leave is something which only your CO has the right to grant you, and it is only granted in extreme situations where going to work is not possible for physical or emotional reasons, and the JET has used all of his/her nenkyuu.
Unpaid leave will (of course) affect your total salary.
If you use all of your nenkyuu and then take unpaid leave (even just one day) without the approval of your CO, you are in violation of your contract and the CO has the right to implement a number of diciplinary actions, including suspension without pay, written admonition, pay reduction for the month in question, refusal to recontract the JET, or some other action which is deemed appropriate by the CO and the PAs.
Please, do not ask for unpaid leave and try to always have a couple days of nenkyuu in case of illness or another extreme situation!
