Apartment Issues

If you are truly unsatisfied with your apartment and insist on moving, you have every right to do so. However, there are a few things you should keep in mind during this process:

Your CO is usually the guarantor for most housing contracts. In almost all cases, a JET needs a guarantor in order to contract with a landlord. In almost all cases in Toyama, the CO will arrange for housing BEFORE a JET arrives in Toyama.

If you're unhappy with the housing situation your CO has provided you with, notify your supervisor, and have them notify your CO, that you intend to move from this apartment. They should be able to help you understand if there are any fees/costs associated with breaking this housing contract.

Additionally, please understand that the CO is in no way obligated to provide you with housing. The housing you were originally provided with is ultimately a favor which the CO has done for you. As such, if you choose to move, your CO isn't obligated to help you find a new apartment, pay for costs associated with moving, or be the guarantor of your new apartment...even if you feel that the original housing with which you were provided is unacceptable. For example, if you told them before you came here that you have tatami allergies but they provided you with an apartment with tatami anyway, it still is up to the CO whether they will help you move to a new place. They may decide to go ahead and help, but this is not required of them, even if you feel you got shortchanged in the original deal. The bottom line is, you can move whenever you want, but the CO is not required to help you regardless of why you are moving. Your CO will tell you whether or not they will help you with moving/costs/etc when you notify them of your intention to do so.

Additionally, don't hesitate to contact me, the PA. I can help direct you where to go/what to do during this process, which can become complicated and expensive.

One last note: if you move to a different area which requires you take some sort of transportation to your school, the school will likely refuse to reimburse you for transportation costs, because you chose to move from the original apartment you were provided with.
