Running short on cash when you arrive

We recommend that a JET brings at LEAST 200,000-300,000 yen to get started with life here in Japan. Ask your predecessor how much they needed to start up to give yourself a better idea of how much you'll need.

However, sometimes unforseeable expenses come up, or you might only be able to bring so much cash with you. Usually a JET's first paycheck comes mid-August. However, if you find you can't pay the various costs that come with starting up your apartment (in addition to groceries and other various costs of living that are associated with those first few weeks!), purchasing insurances, phones, and any other cost you might come across right away...don't fret! There is absolutely no way you will be left out in the cold.

Talk first to your CO. Many schools allow their ALTs to take out loans directly from the school if need be. Otherwise, it may be possible to compromise with your landlord, and set up some sort of payment plan if paying for the various charges associated with your apartment leave you broke. If you find yourself in trouble and neither of these options are available...call the PAs. We will find a way for you to start your life comfortably here.
