Emergencies at home
In extreme cases, such as the death or illness of a loved one, please think first and foremost about your family and your own well-being! Your coworkers will understand if you choose to go home, even if you have class, a presentation or a seminar.
Do what you must to arrange a flight home at your earliest convenience. Many times, this is easier to do from work, because you can have your supervisor help you. Additionally, this is an easy way to notify your coworkers of your absence.
If you must leave right away, and have no time to notify your school/don't come to work upon discovering your emergency, call the PAs and we will take care of notifying your school of what is going on. However, even though you undoubtedly have got a lot on your mind during this difficult time, please, BE SURE TO HAVE YOUR REENTRY PERMIT TAKEN CARE OF BEFORE YOUR DEPARTURE.
If you need any help or find you must extend your stay beyond what you originally planned, keep in touch with the PAs and we will help you do what you need to in order to take care of yourself and your family.
In the unfortunate case that you have suffered a loss, you are entitled to ten consecutive days of paid bereavement leave in the case of a loss of a parent, spouse or child, and up to five consecutive days after the loss of a sibling or grandparent. "Consecutive days" means that weekends and holidays ARE included in the count.
