I need to see a doctor, but my Japanese isn't up to scratch. Can you recommend a doctor in my area that speaks English?

You'll find that most doctors (especially younger ones) have a certain level of English which they have acquired through their medical training. If not, they often have a bilingual "diagnosis" book which they can go through with you.

  • The Toyama Handbook has a good list of hospitals in the prefecture, some with doctors that speak English.

  • Another website you might like to use is from the offical Toyama prefectural government site.

Click here and then wade through the Japanese until you see "A foreign resident's guide". Click on that, then you can select location, speciality, language and day you would like to visit. It will bring up a list of hospitals that match your criteria.

  • If you ever find yourself in need of an Emergency Interpreter in a medical situation, you can call 03-5285-8181 from 9am-10pm. They have Thai, Spanish, English, Korean and Chinese interpreters available.

  • AMDA - The International Medical Information Center (03 5285 8088) provide information by phone on medical organizations where services are available in foreign language, and can also explain the healthcare system to you. Click here for more information on what they offer
