Japanese Private Tutors

Private tutors are oriented toward individual or small group instruction. Classes are usually held in the tutor’s home. Sometimes they are willing to come to your home. This list is short, so the best way to find a private tutor is to ask around.

Ms. Yasuyo Yamashita TEL: 0766-55-4033
Location: Kosugi
Comments: Yamashita-sensei focuses heavily on reading, grammar, vocabulary and listening, but places little emphasis on conversation. Yamashita-sensei is known for her success in preparing students for the proficiency tests. She will pick you up from Kosugi Station (two stops from both Toyama Eki going to Takaoka and from Takaoka Eki going towards Toyama). Individual classes are 2,500 yen, and pair classes are 2,000 a person. May be willing to do groups of three. Highly recommended for test-oriented individuals. She can be very demanding, but is an incredible and friendly person overall.

Ms. Chikako Shimabe TEL: 090-2038-1236
Location: Osawano Town. She will come to you for an additional price (500 yen for those living in Toyama, which is much cheaper than taking the bus).
Charges: 2,500 yen for individual lessons (90 minutes) 2,000 yen if there are two or more people (90 minutes)
Comments: Ms. Shimabe is reliable, friendly, and speaks fairly good English that she prefers not to use during lessons. She also has a child of monolithic proportions who once turned orange because he ate too many citrus fruits. She is an excellent teacher. Highly recommended!

Location: Tonami City (400 yen extra for pick-up/drop-off at Tonami train station)
Charges: 1600 yen per person for an hour and a half.
Private, one-on-one tutor who will work at your pace and focus on your area of interest.

Matsumura-sensei
Location: Fukuno
Comment: Can do Japanese lessons for foreigners, 2000 yen for one hour plus meal - contact her by email (m-kuniko @ p1.tst.ne.jp) for information on available times.
