Making a Phone call in 日本語

If you ever need to call someone at school, the person who answers the phone will probably not speak English. Hopefully this will help you to communicate. (Also check your JET diaries!). To try to avoid this, make sure you have your supervisor's home/keitai numbers and that they have yours too.

OFFICE STAFF

(School name) desu.

JET

(Your school) no (Your name) desu. (Name of person you are calling) – san onegai shimasu.

(May I speak to (Name) please?)

Office Staff

A) Shosho omachi kudasai. (Just a moment please.)

B) Jugyo chu desu. ___ ji ni owarimasu. (She/he is in class. It will finish at __ o’clock.)

C) Shuccho desu. Kyo wa modorimasen. (She/he is not in now. She/he won’t be back today.)

D) Ima seki wo hazushite imasu. (She/he is away from her/his desk now.)

E) Dochira sama desu ka? (May I ask who is calling?)

Useful Phrases

Moichido onegai shimasu. (Please say it again.)

(Sumimasen) Wakarimasen deshita. (I’m sorry) I didn’t understand.

Mosukoshi yukkuri itte itadake masuka? (Could you please speak more slowly?)

How to leave a message:

Dengon wo onegai shitain desuga… (I would like to leave a message…)

(Your name) kara denwa ga attakoto o otsutaekudasai. (Please tell him/her that I called.)

(Your name) ni denwa suru youni otsutaekudasai. (Please ask him/her to call me.)

________to otsutae kudasai. (Please tell him/her ________.)

Denwa bango wa ________desu. (My phone number is ________.)

Hai wakarimashita, arigato gozaimasu. (Yes I see, thank you.)
