Holiday Sports Centre has full free weights, machines, a pool, sento, classes (yoga, jazz, jpop dance, etc.), a massage chair/relax room, and is brand new.

Costs 7300yen a month, plus, its cheaper if you join with more than one person, however, prices may vary.

エアーズ Airs: 0766-26-0123

SPORTS DOME: gym with weights machines, free weights, bikes, step machines and numerous running machines; swimming pool (25m); sento baths with sauna; TV room with massage chairs; sun beds; tennis courts; massages also available for a fee. They also have numerous classes running pretty constantly including boxcercise, aerobics, dance aerobics and martial arts aerobics. I think proper judo classes are available too if you pay a seperate charge.

Located near Takaoka Shimin Hospital (高岡市民病院) next to the Route 8 interchange where the tram road goes underneath Route 8. Good for anyone on the north side of the tracks. They also have a sister gym on the opposite side of town towards Tonami. If you are a member of either gym then you are free to use the other.

Monday to Saturday 10am to 10pm. Except Thusdays (closed) and Sundays (10am - 6pm).

Prices (not exact): 8,500 yen per month for normal membership (does not include tennis court use, but everything else is free - for that you need to pay an extra 2000-ish and become a gold member), 30,000 inscription fee (one time only) for men; 15,000 for women. However they do have special sign up deals where price drops to 10,000 so ask at reception when next campaign is. There may be a scheme where you can introduce new member for a special rate (this is common in Japanese gyms). Note: they require your hanko and gaijin card when you sign up.

Extra info: The aerobics classes are really good and the staff are genuinely friendly. - Don't forget that you must bring a change of trainers and cannot use the ones you normally wear outside. They don't really check up or anything. but you can't walk in with your shoes on from outside. - They have soap, shampoo and hairdryers in the showers/baths areas but no towels.

Toyama

Toyama City Gym (“Training Center”):

Many Toyama-shi ALTs use this gym! Basketball courts, table tennis, martial arts, treadmills, stair masters, elliptical machines, free weights, many weight machines, indoor running course, & group aerobics classes.

Nice locker rooms and showers available. Each visit is ¥420. You pay by inserting your money into a machine inside near the desk that gives you a little ticket that is valid for 2 hours’ use of the facilities. You can also purchase multi-use cards, that give you 10% extra credit for your money.

Alternatively, you can purchase a yearly pass for about ¥25,000. For frequent use, this is by far the best deal (going 3 times a week for a year would be almost ¥75,000 if you paid in individual tickets, so definitely do the yearly pass if you plan to workout a lot!). The yearly passes are purchased at the security office, not at the desk. The Security Office is to the left as you come in the main door.

Parking in the ramp is free for 2 hours with validation. Bring your parking ramp ticket to the front desk of the gym when you arrive and they’ll validate it for you.

  • As with all gyms in Japan, you need to carry your gym shoes with you and change into them in the locker room.

Osawano

Windy

This recreational facility near the Sasazu train station in Osawano is highly recommended. It's not a gym, it's a "wellness resort" with an appropriate name, as it certainly is a breath of fresh air after a hard (or not so hard) day's work. You get 4 zones. The relax zone, with a huge screen TV, massage and fully reclining chairs. The gym zone. A fully stocked gym with cardio and free weights. The onsen zone - men's and women's. And the (misspelled) "bade" zone - an area for all your bathing needs, like swimming, hot tubs, an out door jacuzzi, a walking pool and water slide, sauna, steam room etc. This is a great place to spend cold winter nights, either after school or after snowboarding. It's also a great place if you want to stay fit, because it's so nice you just want to go there all the time! If you live in Osawano or Yatsuo, it's the place to go.

Annual membership is less than 60,000Yen. Cheaper when you join with a friend. Also makes a great day out. Non-member entry for the day is 1500Y, or 1000 with a member.

Summer hours 10AM - 10PM, Winter hours 10AM - 9PM, Weekends 10AM-9PM

Namerikawa

Namerikawa Sougou Taiikukan Center (Namerikawa General Facilities Sports Training Center)

Address: Not sure, but it's about a 15 minute walk from Namerikawa JR station. It's the only gym in Namerikawa, so if someone asks for the gym in town, this is where they would be directed to.

There is a small training room that costs 210 yen each time you go. There are 3 treadmills, a couple of exercise bikes, and some basic free weights. That’s it. It’s really small, but if you are looking for a place to run in the winter or want to lift weights, it'll do. On Saturday mornings there is an aerobics class and other classes include karate and judo. There is also a gym where you can book courts to play basketball, badminton, etc.. After school and on Saturdays and Sundays it is often booked for high school and junior high school tournaments or sports practice, but if you want to play basketball after 7pm or so on a weekday night then it's probably ok.

Hours: the gym is closed every Tuesday and holiday. Monday - Friday the hours are 9am-9pm. (except Tuesday when it's closed)

Saturday and Sunday it is open 9am to 5 pm.

Uozu

Ariso Techno Dome: gym/ball rental, weights, aerobics. [M-Sat 9-9, Sun & Hol 9-5, closed Tues] 0765-23-9800 Sports Academy: Aerobics, gym [pool: M-Sat 9:30-9:15, Sun 9:30-1] 0765-23-0541
