The Daily Schedule Boards

This board tells you if your classes have been changed to another period of cancelled altogether. At junior highs, look for the Kanji for English (英) to make sure it(s still on at the same time. At high schools where there are many English classes, ask your supervisor to ask the person in charge of the board to put your name on classes which you are involved in. 変更なし means there are no changes. Boxes are usually left blank when the scheduled classes have not been moved.

SHS:

There are three year levels and four classes per year on the sample below. One of the schedule changes shows that Homeroom 13’s OCA class has been moved to the 4th period. The Japanese teacher’s name (in Kanji) and the ALT’s name (in katakana) are written below the subject name. If a class has moved from another period on the same day, it will usually be in black. However if it has moved from another day, it may be in red or some other distinguishing colour.

The Monthly Schedule Boards

These boards are always in Japanese and usually found along one of the walls of the main staffroom and/or office. If you need to, ask someone to explain what’s written for you in the beginning of the month. Some staffrooms may also have a yearly board. If you want to be super informed (i.e. of when test periods start and end) keep an eye on this board. It will alert you ahead of time of events like sports day, public holidays, ceremonies, excursions, PTA meetings…everything that your supervisor forgets to tell you about!)
