Fast Food

Coco's (International)

A "family restaurant", i.e. reliable and bland food in a comfortable environment. If you want to fill yourself up in a hurry (say, you’re driving down to the slopes for some snowboarding action!), but you really don’t care about even being able to remember what it was you ate 10 minutes later, this is the place for you. Not fast food but the service is fast (faster than MosBurger) and the menu has English. Prices are reasonable (about 1500-2000 yen for a meal).

Getting There: There are many but the most centrally located is on the way to Oshima/Kosugi/Toyama - about a 15 minute bike ride from the station. On the Hokuriku bank/Akiyoshi street in front of the station, take a right, follow this road all the way to Kojo Park, go past Kojo Park and at the intersection on the far side of the park, turn right. The restaurant is over the little bridge on the left. You can also take the train to Etchu Nakagawa, leaving you with a 5 minute walk to the restaurant. It's open quite late (2:00am maybe) and they have some Tex-Mex food as well as sandwiches and Japanese things. But then again, if you think Japanese food is bland anyway, then eating it at Coco's is like blandness squared.

Hachiban Ramen

3 in Takaoka. One on Route 73 on the opposite side of the road from Casserole. One on Route 44 past Coco’s. One on Route 8 not far down and near to McDonalds and Baskin Robbins.

KFC

Sleep easy knowing you can satisfy those greasy chicken and coleslaw cravings. Worse fries than McDonald's, so much so that some people have been known to grab take out chicken from KFC and fries from McDonald’s. Fast food customization, it’s the way of the future.

Getting there: A 15 minute ride from the station, out on route 8 in North Tak (near Takaoka Daiichi High School). It’s visible from Yamada-denki electrical store. With your back to the store, turn left and walk down route 8 – KFC is on your left. That’s right, you don’t even need to cross the road, you grease monkey.

McDonald's

There are three in the Takaoka area. The most obvious is the one inside the main entrance lobby of Takaoka Station. The second is on the first floor of the SATY Department Store. The other is a little way out on Route 8, on the north side of Takaoka. If you're moving in the direction of Kanazawa on route 8, it's on the right hand side before you reach the exit to Himi.

Mos BurgerBEST 24-Hour food!

Several locations. They tend to be open 24 hours, which is a rare find in these parts, and very handy for those JETs who like the occasional rave etc. Mos Burger is the premier Japanese burger joint. It should, however, not be placed in the fast category as it will always take a good while to get your grub. They make the food after you order, which allows you ample time to peruse the magazine selection. When it's finally ready, it's fresh and hot. So far so good, but I almost missed a train once because they took 30 minutes to make two burgers-so make sure you’re not in a hurry if you want to eat here. The chicken burgers have a good reputation, and the teriyaki burgers are also worth a try. Like Jules says in Pulp Fiction – "They got the same stuff... but there it's just a little bit different".

Getting There: There's one up near the KFC/Yamada-denki. There’s also one on the main road that leads away from the south exit of Takaoka Station – just follow the road up for a kilometer and a half, and there it is on your left-hand side. There is another one on the way to Oshima, near both Coco's and Taj’s Pizza. It's a small-looking place on the left side, a block past Hachiban Ramen. It used to be absolutely tiny, but they just expanded it.

Pizza Willy’s – BEST Pizza!

Generally regarded as the best place for Pizza in Takaoka, and what’s more they’ll deliver them to your door. Pizza Willy is on the short covered street that slopes up to the Buddha from the tram line. As you walk up the slope, it’s on your right.
