Akiyoshi's (あきよし) – BEST Yakitori!
All you need if you're craving yakitori. Great food, reasonable prices, cold Kirin beer and a lively atmosphere. Good place to start off a night of drinking. There are two locations in Takaoka. One is just across from the station, on the right of the Hokuriku Bank. The other one is down the side street across from the main Akiyoshi, basically across the street and one door down from the barbershop on the corner. It’s next to a strip club, and it's got a stone lion in front of the door. The first one is smoky and hectic with lots of noisy salarymen, the second is more relaxed. The menu has pictures.
Alaa
Great Japanese food, not cheap, but a good treat. They have a habit of playing scary music in the entrance, to create a vaguely terrifying atmosphere. One you get inside, though, it’s good times all round. To get there, turn down the covered street alongside Daiwa building on your left, walk to the end of the Daiwa building, and turn right on a tiny street. You should see a sign for "Alaa" from the covered street looking down the tiny street.
Botejakko
A fun okonomiyaki restaurant where you make the okonmiyaki yourself, right on your table! Good times, and the saved labor costs mean cheap eats. Across from the (not so great) Saizeria pizza joint in Nomura, near the south-east corner of Kojo Park.
Manyo – BEST sushi!
Himi's premiere Sushi Restaurant: Combining a traditional Japanese interior with modern jazz and all kinds of sublime sushi. Located on the Main Street in Himi, about 10 minutes walk from the station. Go straight from the station, turn right at Main Street, walk another 8 minutes and it's on the right just after the bridge. The chef speaks fluent English.
Okura Sushi (オクラ すし)
This is a Kaiten Sushi (conveyor-belt sushi) restaurant, and this is the most central one in Takaoka. It serves good, cheap sushi. It’s next to Bamyan on the same stretch of tram road as Shangri-La, which is further down.
Sushi-kuine
A “rotating sushi” restaurant in South Tak with plates starting from 120 yen. The staff are very friendly and special order plates are accepted. From the south side of Takaoka station, take a left at the first main intersection (with a Lawsons on the far left corner) and go several blocks until there is a huge intersection with a bridge on your left. Take a right. You will pass Yoshino Middle School on your left and the road will split. Stay on the right side and continue for about another kilometer. Sushi-kuine is on your right, opposite B&B House. It has a bright yellow sign in kanji and hiragana.
Sushisute (すしすて
Reasonable and good (about 1000 yen for 10 pieces of sushi). Turn right at Akiyoshis and it's across from Hotel Alpha - 1.
Taiya (たいや)
A very nice tempura/soba place in the Washington Hotel, first floor. A great place to go for lunches but dinner can be a bit expensive.
The Owl
Hours: Open 18:00~03:00 (Last order 02:30) Tel: 0766-22-1003
This restaurant recently changed their menu and now it’s “gaijin friendly”, meaning it has a picture menu, and so forth... Good food, especially sashimi, and good atmosphere. Next to ‘Da Friends’ (see above) on the covered street. Moderate prices.
Yachan’s – BEST Okonomiyaki!
Wonderful okonomiyaki restaurant across the street from Takaoka hospital. This places serves as good an okonomiyaki as you will find in Toyama-ken, and on top of that it has a great atmosphere. The owners are a super-friendly young couple and they speak brilliant English. They make all kinds of okonomiyaki, including Hiroshima style, and will chat about their holidays and adventures with you. Prices range from 650 – 850 yen. They also serve big Asahi beers and various flavours of Chu-Hi. Oh, and chicken necks are a distinctive treat.
