Due to its close proximity to Russia (Vladivostok is not so far by boat), Toyama-ken has a sizable Russian community. Many work as sailors and live in the port towns of Shinminato and Fushiki. Roshiya, featuring fairly authentic Russian cuisine, caters to this community. Most people I know have never eaten traditional Russian food, so dinner here can offer a memorable experience.
There are appetizer and dinner sets, ranging in price from 1,300 to 5,000. Pirogi (meat wrapped in a bread-like crust), borscht (tomato soup with meat and vegetables), caviar, smoked salmon, grilled lamb, marinated cabbage, and Russian tea are some of the more interesting and tasty items available. Choose the set that fits your budget and has enough food on it that you know you like. There are alcoholic beverages, including beer, and what else besides VODKA, VODKA, VODKA! Don't forget to sniff your bread before downing your shot.
Lunch is a particularly good deal, at 980 per meal. You get borscht, a pirogi and tea.
Getting There: Take the street car to the Nishi-cho stop, then walk to your right, down the Chuo-dori shopping street (by Lotteria). Turn right on the next street. Roshiya is just beyond a pachinko parlor on your right. It's in the basement with a clothes shop on the first floor.
