三三五五 (3355)

Shakako 1-14-17

Hours: 5pm–1am except Wednesdays

Tel: 0765 24 5262

3355 has an air of mysterious sophistication as you go up onto the 1st floor. It`s mostly dark but a faint light gleams enough for you to see your friends sitting at low tables. Downstairs has a more lively atmosphere. Wherever you choose to sit, you have the excitement of watching your food being prepared in the trendy kitchen and the wide-eyed, alert restaurant staff who give the impression of genuinely enjoying their job. Food is mostly traditional Japanese. Prices can be a bit hefty, but it`s worth it to experience the zany atmosphere.

Getting There: near the station, parallel to the sea-front

Gaishokuya

Izakaya style, yo. Good place to go if you're with a large group.

Getting There: Located in the Apple Hill shopping mall, first floor. From JR Uozu station go straight, 10 minute-ish walk.

Kaneya

A very good place located near the Uozu JR Station. The food is excellent, but a bit pricey. Sitting at the counter and chatting with the cook is highly recommended.

Katari

Big menu, wide selection of small dishes. It's good enough to be crowded on the weekends, so get there early.

Getting there: Take a right out of the JR station, go about three blocks and it'll be on your right.

Kito-Kito

Rotating Sushi restaurant. Toyama-ken’s favourite rotating chain sushi shop. During non-busy hours, there is rarely anything on the belt and you have to ask for the sushi you want. Popular ones among ALTs are: Hamachi (the “bad” cuts of tuna so on a cheap plate!); negi-toro (minced tuna? with chopped green onions wrapped in nori); kani (crab legs, about the 3rd cheapest plate). Different plates denote difference prices so if you’re on some kind of budget, look out for the plate colour!

Getting There: About a 20 minute walk from JR Uozu station. Go straight past Apple Hill turn left on Route 8. It is on your left-hand side, adjacent to Coco’s California Restaurant.

Kosaka

A yakitori place that’s part of the Akiyoshi chain. Has an English menu. The staff is great too! Good place to go with a friend to have some beers and good food. Highly recommended!

Getting There: About a 15 minute walk from the JR Uozu station. Go straight and turn right at the 3rd set of lights. (There should be a bento place at that corner.) Then go straight past the first set of lights. After walking a few more meters you will see it on your left hand side.

Rotating Sushi - Sushi-ya (name unknown)

If you don’t want to walk to route 8 and Kito-Kito, there is another rotating sushi bar across the street from Meibundo (on route 135). It’s a little smaller than Kito-Kito but prices start at 110yen per plate. People have said it is also a good place to go get your sushi fix!

Getting There: Turn left at the Apple Hill intersection and it’s right there on your left hand side.

Sugano

Izakaya style. Very good food - everything from sushi to tempura to whatever you can think of. No English menu but some pictures are available. The bill adds up pretty quickly, though and a 2 man bill for 4 people eating and drinking is not uncommon, so be careful. But if you’re looking for a good izakaya place, this one is recommended.

Getting There: 4 min walk from JR Uozu station. Turn right at the station lights, then turn left at the first small street. It is located a few steps away from the stairs leading up to “Banana’s” (see bar section).

Ten-yone

A famous restaurant known for its great tempura. It's been written up in many restaurant reviews and magazines. Prices are on the high side, but it's well worth it. I’ve been told that you can tell the chef a price range you are willing to pay and he will make a meal according to it!

Getting There: Close to Dentetsu Uozu Station.

Tonkatsuya

Satisfy your pork cutlet craving at this roomy place across from the Spar near the Dentetsu station.

Okonomiyaki

  • Note: all these places offer very good okonomiyaki and yakisoba which you can grill yourself or have the cook prepare for you.

Bottejako (ぼってじゃこ)

Located on route 135, across and down the street from Meibundo. From JR Uozu station go straight and turn left at the lights where Meibundo is located (This is also the Apple Hill intersection) It will be on your left hand side with the sign in Hiragana. This is a good little shop. There’s no English menu but the food is good.

Chikusui(dou)

Closed Wednesdays

5 minute walk from JR Uozu station. Go straight and turn left at the second set of lights, it is on your left-hand-side, located directly across the street from Uozu City Hall. It’s a cute place but easy to walk past and miss! Their soft ice-cream parfaits are very popular among high school students in the summer. The ika (squid) yakisoba is delicious and the prices are excellent! They also serve a very nice coffee. Highly recommended and a favourite among ALTs and also junior high and high school students too!
