VIETNAM VISA:
Usually when you travel within SE Asia you won’t need to get a visa in advance. However, when you travel to Vietnam you will need to get your visa before you go. Travel agents try to charge anything between 10,000 and 20,000 to do this for you. However, you can do it yourself very simply for just 5000 yen (plus a bit of postage!).
Go to: http://www.vietnamembassy.jp/english/consular/visa.html and download the application form. You just have to send the application form to the embassy in Tokyo along with one passport photo, your original passport and 5000 yen in cash (cost at June 2004 – call to check that the price is the same). Send it ‘kakitome’ at the Post Office (registered post) for about 500 yen. They will send your passport back to you by courier, which you will pay for on receipt (700 yen). On average it takes about a week but give yourself plenty of time incase they are busy!
