SEPTEMBER/ OCTOBER

Opening ceremony, Sports Day, Concert and School Festival

You will need to remember your suit for the Opening Ceremony and you’ll probably have to make a short introductory speech. Sports Day is a huge event in the school calendar (and practiced for weeks in advance). It’s a good opportunity to get involved either by helping out on the day or by participating. There will also be a festival and/or concert at some time during these two months that may require you to work on a Saturday.

Just a few words from the principal to wish the students and teachers a safe winter break. Again your suit is needed and thermal undies are a must, as the gymnasium will be freezing!!

Entrance Exams and Graduation

Mid-March is high school entrance exam time and a very busy time for both the 3rd year students and their teachers. This means you won’t be working with them much, if at all. The third week of March is graduation. This is a hectic time but great fun as the students get a huge send off. You’ll be required to wear a suit (preferably black or at least dark) and possibly a white tie. The last week in March is the closing ceremony and the beginning of the spring vacation (approximately 2 weeks).

School year begins and teachers change

At the start of April some of your teachers will change schools to another within the ken. It is unlikely that they will know in advance who will go or where to, but you should try to be present for what is usually a massive desk rearrangement and clean up of the staff room. There will also be many school ceremonies and parties at this time to say goodbye to students and teachers and to welcome new ones.
