Tonami Region
The Tonami region (砺波地域) is located in the western part of Toyama Prefecture and is well known for its peaceful rural landscapes, traditional villages, and rich agricultural heritage. The region includes cities such as Tonami, Nanto, and Oyabe. Surrounded by mountains and wide plains, the area offers a quieter and more traditional side of Toyama.
Tonami is especially famous for its unique scattered village landscape, where farmhouses are spread out across the countryside rather than grouped together. This distinctive style of settlement has shaped the region’s identity for centuries. The area is also an important agricultural center, producing high-quality rice, vegetables, and flowers, including the tulips celebrated at the annual Tonami Tulip Fair.
One of the region’s most famous attractions is Gokayama, a historic mountain area known for its traditional gassho-zukuri farmhouses. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Gokayama preserves the culture and architecture of rural Japan and offers visitors a glimpse into traditional mountain life. The region also features hot springs, hiking routes, and traditional craft industries such as washi paper making and wood carving.
With its beautiful countryside, strong cultural traditions, and warm local communities, the Tonami region provides a relaxing and authentic experience of rural Japan.
