Niikawa Region

The Niikawa region (新川地域) is located in the eastern part of Toyama Prefecture and is known for its dramatic natural scenery, fresh seafood, and deep connection to both the mountains and the sea. Stretching from the coastline of Toyama Bay to the towering peaks of the Northern Japanese Alps, the region includes cities such as Uozu, Kurobe, and Namerikawa.

Niikawa is famous for its rich natural environment and outdoor attractions. Visitors can experience the breathtaking Kurobe Gorge, one of Japan’s deepest gorges, or enjoy the stunning seasonal views of the Tateyama Mountain Range rising behind the bay. The region is also home to the unique “mirage road” phenomenon and the glowing firefly squid that appear along the coast in spring.

The area has a strong cultural identity shaped by fishing, agriculture, and mountain life. Local cuisine features some of Toyama’s freshest seafood, including masu sushi, white shrimp, and firefly squid.
